Growing Granby

Growing Granby is a community growing project that aims to improve the quality of life for all those living in the Toxteth neighbourhood.

In July 2011, a group of volunteers got together and approached local housing association, Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH), to ask if they could lease a derelict piece of land on Kingsley Road for three years.

LMH said yes, and Growing Granby was born. The patch of land now features an allotment patch and a seating area, built from the bricks of demolished local homes, in a bid to recycle available resources. There is a also play area and a wildlife corner.

Co-founder Jean Grant has also planted an apple orchard throughout Granby, with the help of local school children. She has researched old maps of the area to try and understand how the land looked before it become an inner-city area.

Growing Granby continues to encourage planting in the area, and engage local people in community building.

Jean Grant and gardening volunteer Anna showed Kingsley Primary’s Year 5 learner journalists around Growing Granby, and Jean taught them all about the area’s history.
